Himanta Sarma Confident of BJP Win in Assam Polls, Says Congress Won't Recover
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has shown full confidence in BJP’s sweeping win in the upcoming panchayat elections. According to him, the BJP and its allies are already leading the race with several seats going uncontested, indicating the declining presence of Congress in rural Assam. He emphasized that the Congress will not be able to rebuild itself in the state before the 2026 assembly elections.
Sarma stated that in many districts, the opposition failed to even field candidates, and in around 10 to 12 Zila Parishad seats, BJP-allied candidates have already won without a contest. He further clarified that the contest in most areas is now between BJP and independent candidates, not the Congress.
While addressing reports of irregularities in the nomination process, the CM admitted that some isolated cases exist but assured that they do not affect the integrity of the overall election process. He also spoke about BJP’s strong internal unity and coordination with its partners like AGP and Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha, which has enabled the party to distribute tickets without internal conflict.
Calling the panchayat elections the beginning of a larger political journey, Sarma said that BJP is setting the stage for upcoming council and assembly elections. He added that the official campaign will be launched on April 21 and will showcase BJP’s vision for grassroots governance.
Taking a jab at Congress, he said the party is shrinking to a few pockets in Assam and is internally divided, lacking the organization to pose a serious challenge.
